David Fischer

PHIVOLCS FaultFinder is an essential tool developed by Joel Bandibas for identifying and analyzing fault lines, enhancing earthquake preparedness in vulnerable regions.
2024 Editor's Rating

The PHIVOLCS FaultFinder mobile app provides detailed information on the proximity between the user's location, address, or a chosen spot on the map to the nearest active fault line. To access the extensive active fault database hosted by PHIVOLCS and the essential web services, an internet connection is required. The database acts as the primary data source for services like Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Processing Service (WPS), crucial for displaying the active fault map and querying fault trace locations.

Featuring three base maps - the Philippine Geoportal Map, Google Maps, and OpenStreetMap - delivered as web services by the respective data owners, this app leverages a wealth of geographic information. The Philippine Geoportal Map, supplied by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) of the Philippines, enhances the cartographic experience within the application.

Operating as a traditional Web-based Geographic Information System (WebGIS) in alignment with the Spatial Data Infrastructure model, the FaultFinder app stands as a testament to modern geospatial technology. The collaborative effort behind this application involves distinguished entities such as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines, and Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan.

Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Renato Solidum, Director of PHIVOLCS, the development of this innovative app was set in motion. Dr. Joel C. Bandibas from GSJ led the creation of the FaultFinder app with unwavering support and expertise from PHIVOLCS's research and development team.
